TMV Installation, Testing & Servicing

A thermostatic mixing valve, or TMV, blends hot and cold water to control the temperature delivered at the outlet.

They are commonly used where hot water is accessible to vulnerable people, including health, aged care, childcare and disability settings, and can also be required as part of particular hot water installations.

The job is not simply fitting the valve and leaving it in place.

TMVs need to operate correctly under real conditions, and where periodic testing applies, the valve needs to be checked, serviced and re-tagged on the required cycle.

Contemporary Plumbing provides plumbing, gas and hot water across Canberra and Queanbeyan, with the capability to install, service and test TMVs where the property or use requires them.

When a TMV Needs Attention

TMV work is usually triggered by scheduled testing, inconsistent outlet temperatures or a change to the hot water system that means the existing valve needs to be checked.

Contemporary Plumbing can test the valve, assess how it is performing and determine whether servicing, adjustment or replacement is required.

The focus is on keeping the valve operating correctly and leaving a clear record of the work completed.

Scheduled Testing

Where periodic testing applies, we can test, service and document the TMV as required.

Faults & Replacement

If the valve is no longer controlling temperature correctly, we can assess whether it can be serviced or needs replacing.

Why TMV Work Is More Than a Temperature Check

A TMV can appear to be working while still failing to control outlet temperature correctly.

Testing looks at how the valve performs, not simply whether hot water is coming through the outlet.

The valve needs to maintain the required delivery temperature and continue operating correctly under normal use.TMV work is carried out in line with the relevant requirements of AS 4032.3.

Where a valve does not perform correctly, the next step may be servicing, component replacement or full valve replacement depending on the condition of the unit.

For property managers and facility operators, the practical requirement is also documentation.

Testing needs to be recorded properly so there is a clear compliance history for the device.

What Can Affect a TMV Job

The existing hot water system, valve location, access and condition of surrounding pipework can all affect the work.
A valve may be accessible and straightforward to service, or it may sit within a plant room, ceiling space or another area where access needs to be coordinated.

The hot water system itself also matters.

If supply temperatures are unstable or another part of the system is not operating correctly, that can affect how the TMV performs.

The useful starting point is to confirm whether the problem sits with the valve itself or elsewhere in the hot water system.

How We Work on TMV Jobs

We start by confirming what valve is installed, why it is there and what testing or servicing requirement applies.

The valve is checked for operation and delivered water temperature.

Where servicing is required, the valve is worked on and re-tested before being returned to service.

If the TMV cannot perform correctly, we explain whether repair or replacement is the more practical next step.

Testing and servicing are documented so there is a clear record for the property and future compliance requirements.

Annual TMV Testing

Where annual testing applies, keeping the testing history current is important.

A missed service can create unnecessary follow-up for the property owner or manager and make it harder to establish when the valve was last checked.

Contemporary Plumbing can complete the required testing, servicing and documentation so the compliance side of the job stays connected to the plumbing work itself.

For larger managed-property or commercial programs, scheduled TMV servicing can also be coordinated through the Commercial Maintenance team.
