Leaking Taps

A leaking tap can be a small fault, but once it starts dripping, stiffening up or leaking around the fixture, it rarely gets better on its own.

Contemporary Plumbing repairs leaking taps and mixers across Canberra and Queanbeyan through our dedicated residential plumbing team.

Find Where the Water Is Actually Coming From

A dripping outlet is easy to spot.

A leak around the base of a mixer, beneath the sink or from a connection behind the fixture can be less obvious.

That matters because the visible tap is not always the part that needs replacing.

Our residential plumbers can identify where the leak is coming from, repair the existing fixture where practical and let you know when replacement makes more sense.

Fix the Fault Before Replacing the Fixture

A leaking tap does not automatically need a new tap.

Sometimes the issue is a serviceable internal component. Sometimes the fixture itself is ageing and continuing to repair it is no longer the best use of your money.

The useful part is knowing which situation you have before anything gets replaced.

Repair Where It Makes Sense

If the fixture is otherwise in good condition, we can repair the failed component where practical.

Replace When the Tap Has Had Its Run

Where the fixture is ageing, damaged or repeatedly causing problems, we can help with replacement and installation.

Tap Repairs Throughout the Home

Leaking taps can show up in different ways depending on the fixture and where it is installed.

Our team can assist with:

Kitchen Taps & Mixers

Dripping kitchen taps, leaking mixers and water escaping around the fixture or sink connections.

Bathroom Taps

Basin and bath taps that drip, leak around the body or no longer shut off as they should.

Shower Mixers

Problems with shower mixers, controls and associated plumbing components.

Laundry Taps

Laundry mixers, washing machine taps and leaking water connections.

Outdoor Taps

Garden taps and exterior water points that drip, leak or are becoming difficult to operate.

Leaking Tap Repairs Canberra

A tap can leak for more than one reason.

Internal seals or cartridges can wear. Connections can loosen. The fixture itself can deteriorate over time.

That is why we do not start by assuming a washer, cartridge or complete replacement is automatically the answer.

The plumber needs to see where the water is escaping and how the fixture is behaving.

For a newer tap with a serviceable fault, the repair can be straightforward.

For an older fixture with several worn components, repeated leaks or parts that are becoming difficult to source, replacement may be the cleaner long-term option.

The repair should follow the fault.

The Leak Under the Sink Is Not Always the Tap

This is one of the easier plumbing problems to misread.

Water appears inside the cabinet and the mixer above gets blamed.

Sometimes that is exactly where the leak is coming from.

Other times the water is escaping from a connection, flexible hose, waste fitting or another part of the plumbing underneath.

The same applies in bathrooms and laundries.

Water can travel across surfaces before it becomes visible, so the wet spot is not always directly below the fault.

Finding the source first can save replacing a perfectly good fixture that was never the problem.

When the Drip Becomes Something More

A tap dripping into the sink is annoying.

A tap leaking into cabinetry, behind a vanity or around a wall connection is a different problem.

Once water is escaping somewhere it can affect surrounding finishes, the plumbing fault starts creating a problem outside the fixture itself.

That is where it is worth getting the leak looked at sooner rather than later.

If water is appearing around, beneath or behind the tap rather than only dripping from the outlet, let our team know when you book.

That gives the plumber a better starting point before arriving at the property.

Repair or Replace?

There is no benefit in replacing a tap that only needs a straightforward repair.

There is equally little value in repeatedly putting parts into a fixture that is clearly reaching the end of its useful life.

A few things can influence that decision:

  • Age and condition of the fixture
  • What component has failed
  • Whether replacement parts are available
  • Whether the tap has had repeated issues
  • Whether the homeowner already wants to update the fixture

If the existing tap is worth repairing, we can keep the job there.

If replacement makes more sense, we can help install the new fixture and make sure it suits the plumbing already in place.

Already Bought a New Tap or Mixer?

That is fine.

If you already have the replacement ready, let our team know what you have when you make the booking.

A photo of the existing fixture and the new tap can help give us an idea of what is being changed before the plumber arrives.

Most replacements are straightforward when the new fitting suits the existing setup.

If the new fixture needs changes to the surrounding plumbing or connections, it is better to know that before the old one comes out.

For larger bathroom, kitchen or laundry changes, our residential team can also handle the wider plumbing rather than treating the tap as an isolated job.

When More Than One Tap Starts Behaving Differently

One leaking tap is usually a fixture problem.

Several taps changing at around the same time can be worth mentioning.

A noticeable change in water pressure, unusual behaviour across multiple fixtures or several new leaks may point to something broader than each tap independently developing the same fault.

That does not automatically mean there is a larger plumbing issue.

It simply gives the plumber more context to work with.

If more than one fixture has changed, tell us when you call rather than treating each tap as a separate problem.

Everyday Plumbing With More Capability Behind It

A leaking tap should not need to become a complicated plumbing project.

Contemporary Plumbing’s residential team can handle everyday tap and fixture repairs, backed by the wider capability of a plumbing business with more than 45 people.

That means if the leak turns out to involve something beyond the tap itself, there is broader plumbing support behind the team.

Our residential team provides plumbing, gas and hot water across Canberra and Queanbeyan.

If a kitchen, bathroom, laundry or outdoor tap is dripping or leaking, tell us what you can see and where the water is appearing.

We can work from there.
