The Right Help, Wherever You Are in the Hot Water Decision

Hot water problems do not all start in the same place.

Sometimes the system has stopped completely and the priority is getting hot water back into the home. Other times, the unit is still working but getting older, and there is an opportunity to make a considered decision before the choice becomes urgent.

We can help across the full lifecycle of the system, from diagnosing an existing fault through to planning a completely new installation.

Hot Water Repairs

Diagnostics and repairs for gas, electric and heat pump systems, including urgent hot water failures.

Hot Water Replacement & Upgrades

Like-for-like replacements, capacity changes and moves between gas, electric and heat pump systems.

Hot Water Installation

New systems for renovations, new homes, relocations and changes to the existing plumbing layout.

Heat Pump Hot Water

Heat pump installation and replacement for households considering an efficient electric hot water option.

Gas Hot Water

Repairs, replacements and installations for gas storage and continuous flow systems.

Hot Water Repairs and Replacement

A problem with your hot water system does not automatically mean the whole unit needs replacing.

The fault may sit within the unit itself, a valve, water pressure, pipework, gas supply, electrical components or another part of the installation. Our residential plumbers can inspect what is happening and explain whether repair or replacement makes more sense.

We work across:

  • Gas storage systems
  • Gas continuous flow systems
  • Electric storage systems
  • Heat pump hot water systems
  • Leaking hot water units
  • Systems producing little or no hot water
  • Poor or inconsistent hot water pressure
  • Ageing systems that are no longer operating as expected

If the system has failed today, same-day hot water callouts are available across Canberra and Queanbeyan, subject to availability.

If it is still working but getting older, there can be real value in looking at the next system before urgency makes the decision for you.

When the Shortest Lead Time Wins

The worst time to choose your next hot water system is often the day the old one stops working.

The shower is cold, everyone wants hot water back and suddenly you are making a decision that may stay with the property for the next 10 to 15 years.

Under that pressure, the shortest lead time often wins. A particular unit is available today, the supplier has one in stock, and restoring hot water becomes more important than comparing whether the system is actually the right size, fuel type or technology for the household.

Sometimes that available system will be exactly right. Sometimes it is simply the one that could be installed fastest.
Planning before an ageing system fails gives you the opportunity to choose the next unit on its merits.

That can include:

  • Household hot water demand
  • Appropriate capacity
  • Gas, electric and heat pump options
  • Existing plumbing and electrical infrastructure
  • Installation location
  • Future plans for the home
  • Current incentives that may apply

Getting the Size Right Matters Every Day

One of the problems we see is not a faulty hot water system at all. It is a system that was the wrong size from the day it went in.

Put a 170 litre unit into a four-person household where everyone showers around the same time, and the last person can end up finishing with cold water.

Go too far the other way and put a 315 litre unit into a two-person household, and you can spend an extra couple of hundred dollars a year keeping water hot that nobody is likely to use.

Headcount is only the starting point.

Four people showering between 6am and 8am creates different demand from four people whose routines are spread throughout the day. Dishwasher use, washing, bathroom habits and how the household may change over the next five to ten years can also influence the decision.

The goal is not simply to replace the litres written on the old cylinder.

It is to select a system around the household that will actually use it.

Heat Pump, Gas or Something Like-for-Like?

Canberra homeowners now have more to consider when replacing a hot water system than they may have had the last time one was installed.

Another gas system may still make sense for some properties.

For households already considering electrification, solar or future energy upgrades, a heat pump can also become part of the conversation.

Contemporary Plumbing installs and replaces major gas, electric and heat pump systems, including products from Rheem, Rinnai, Bosch, Vulcan, Sanden, Reclaim and Thermann.

Because we work across the different technologies, the conversation can start with the home rather than with a predetermined product.

We can look at what you currently have, how the household uses hot water, available installation space and what you are planning for the property before working through the practical options.

Eligible households may also have access to ACT or federal incentives on certain efficient systems. Programs and eligibility change, so rather than publishing a fixed amount, speak with our team about what may currently apply.

Planning a Hot Water Replacement?

A Good System Can Still Be Let Down by the Installation

The brand on the cylinder does not protect you from a poor installation.

Some of the warranty problems that arise later can relate to the installation around the unit rather than the product itself.

That can include:

  • Missing or incorrectly rated pressure limiting valves
  • Expansion valves installed incorrectly
  • Isolation valves that are difficult to access
  • Tempering valve issues
  • Incorrect gas or electrical commissioning

The frustrating part is that the homeowner may not know anything is wrong when the system first goes in.

The issue can appear years later when something fails or a warranty claim is made.

That is why we put as much importance on how the system is installed and commissioned as we do on which unit is selected.

Contemporary Plumbing has appropriately licensed plumbing and gas teams working across the ACT and NSW, backed by established safety, compliance and insurance systems.
