Backflow Prevention for Properties That Require It

Not every property needs a testable backflow prevention device.

The requirement depends on the level of risk created by the property and how its water systems are connected.

Common triggers can include commercial premises, medical facilities, some irrigation systems, bore water connections and rainwater systems that interact with mains water.

The first step is understanding whether backflow protection is required and what type of device is appropriate for the property.

Contemporary Plumbing provides plumbing, gas and hot water across Canberra and Queanbeyan, with licensed capability to install, test and service backflow prevention devices where required.

When a Backflow Device Needs Attention

Backflow work is usually triggered by scheduled testing, a failed device, a new installation or a change to the property that affects how the water supply is protected.

Contemporary Plumbing can test the device, assess how it is performing and determine whether servicing, repair or replacement is required.

The focus is on keeping the backflow protection operating correctly and making sure the required testing and documentation are completed.

Annual Testing

Where periodic testing applies, we can test the device, record the result and complete the required reporting.

Repairs & Replacement

If the device does not pass testing, we can assess whether it can be serviced or repaired, or whether replacement is the more practical next step.

Why Backflow Testing Matters

A backflow prevention device protects the drinking water network from contamination.

Its role is to stop water from travelling in the wrong direction where pressure changes or cross-connections could otherwise allow non-potable water to enter the mains supply.

Backflow prevention work is governed by AS/NZS 2845 and testable devices need to be tested by an appropriately licensed tester.

The important part is not simply having a device installed.

The device also needs to remain operational and, where periodic testing applies, the result needs to be documented correctly.

What Can Trigger a Backflow Requirement

The requirement is tied to the actual hazard presented by the property.

That can include premises with higher-risk water use, commercial operations, medical facilities, irrigation systems, bore connections or rainwater systems connected alongside mains water.

Some properties need containment protection at the water supply boundary, while others may require additional protection within the site depending on how water is used.

Most ordinary residential properties do not need a testable backflow device.
That is why the job should start with the actual property and water arrangement rather than assuming every site needs the same equipment.

How We Work on Backflow Jobs

We start by confirming what device is installed or what level of protection the property requires.

For existing testable devices, the unit is tested by a licensed backflow tester and the result is recorded.

If the device cannot pass testing, we explain whether servicing, repair or replacement is required.

For new installations, the device type and location need to suit the risk and the relevant water authority requirements.

The completed work is then documented for the property and any required compliance process.

Annual Testing & Reporting

Where annual testing is required, the test result needs to be recorded and submitted through the relevant authority process.

In the ACT, Icon Water has requirements around registered and testable backflow containment devices.
Contemporary Plumbing can handle the testing and required reporting so the customer is not left with a completed plumbing visit but unfinished compliance paperwork.

For managed properties, facilities and commercial sites, maintaining that documentation also supports future testing, audits and maintenance records.

For larger scheduled programs, backflow testing can also be coordinated through the Commercial Maintenance team.
